About the Lecture:

In the Jim Crow US South where segregation between White and Black people was strictly enforced, where did the Chinese immigrants fit in? What did their social, cultural, and economic life look like? In this research talk, Dr. Shaolu Yu will share the story of the Chinese-owned grocery stores in the Jim Crow South as multiracial and multifunctional spaces for self-mobilization and cultural preservation.

About Dr. Yu:

Dr. Shaolu Yu is currently an Associate Professor in Urban Studies at Rhodes College, Memphis, Tennessee, USA. Trained as an urban geographer in an interdisciplinary background and participating in projects in urban studies in China, the U.S., and Canada, Dr. Yu has developed a comparative and global perspective and a mixed method approach in her research on cities. Her current research interests include: Urban Space and Place-making, Migration and Mobility, Race and Ethnicity, and GIS applications in visualizing and analyzing spatial data. Her papers have been published in the journals Annals of Association of American Geographers, The Professional Geographer, Urban Geography, Geographical Review, and The Journal of Transport Geography.
