I’m a Master’s student from Singapore with a background in Anthropology who’s interested in researching global pottery flows. I want to think about aesthetics, creativity, design, and making, in the context of these transnational flows. What makes pottery specifically “Japanese”, and how is “Japanese pottery” understood internationally? I want to trace the aesthetic supply chain of Japanese pottery, focusing on how potteries are affectively and sensually, showing how Japanese pottery undergoes a process of “translation” along this supply chain, encoded with flexible meanings that can be decoded simultaneously to mean different things to different people.
